Wrist Pain
Wrist Pain
Wrist Pain is often used to describe pain in the wrist, thumb, palm, or forearm. Many of the structures that cross over the wrist begin way up in the elbow and terminate deep into the palm or fingers.
The wrist joint itself is made up of 10 bones. There are two rows of carpal bones and the two forearm bones. Several nerves and tendons all cross this joint, and it is supported by more ligaments than you can imagine. All this is to say it is a complex joint made of many structures.
As with any pain problem we must first identify the correct cause with a history and examination of the patient. Once we have our diagnosis, we can commence treatment if appropriate and a referral to another specialist is not required.
Common causes of wrist pain we have come to us for management include:
Arthritis (Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid)
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Repetitive Stress Disorders
Sporting Injuries
In some cases, advanced imaging is required to rule out pathology or to help us give a clear prognosis (estimate of how much better it will become and how long it might take).
Once we decide that conservative treatment is right for you, we may use:
Chiropractic Adjustments
Mobilisation
Traction
Soft Tissue Treatment
Shockwave Therapy
Most patients will require a combination of rest, treatment, and rehabilitative exercise to successfully recover from wrist pain conditions. In cases of chronic disease, such as osteoarthritis, some ongoing management may be beneficial.
