Mid Back Pain

Like most spine pain problems, middle back pain has many causes and it is important to always have had or to rule out sinister causes of pain. Part of our standard assessment and examination addresses this concern.

Sometimes mid back pain is one potential early sign of heart or lung complications.

The most important part of the history taking, and examination process is ruling out the possibility that the pain is sinister. Once we are satisfied that your pain is musculoskeletal and not sinister then we can proceed with treatment.

Some of the types of middle back pain or problems that we see in our clinic include rib problems, intercostal muscle pain, scapular pain, muscular pains, scapula-thoracic dyskinesis.

Many of the problems we see in the clinic have started over trivial movements where there has been a sudden grab of pain (and no other symptoms) that now aggravates on breathing movements. Other times there is an over use problem. Often we find that there is a core recruitment issue that is not holding the spine in a neutral position when executing whole body movements that require significant muscular effort.

Therapy may involve: Chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapy directed at fibrous adhesions, activity modification, shoulder girdle re-education and strengthening.
