Back Stiffness

Back stiffness is a broad category of problem with many causes. Patients often describe an area of the spine as 'stiff' when it has limited, painful, or difficult (tight) movement.

To help patients with back stiffness, we must first determine the source of the problem. This is done during the examination and subsequent treatment.

First, if pathology is suspected, we rule it out. We can do this, for example, by referring to a medical professional for advanced imaging or medical testing. This, however, is less common. The majority of patients do not present with major pathology.

Second, we use specialised tests that target specific muscles, nerves, or bony joints to determine which structures are involved.

Third, we conduct an examination in which we 'feel' the structures that produced positive results. This allows us to determine whether there are any painful, tight, or tender areas that require treatment.

Finally, before beginning treatment, we form a concise diagnosis and communicate it to you. This explanation includes treatment options and helps set realistic expectations for the outcomes we believe we can deliver.
